On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to Ningbo, China in June 2027, for the 17th ICUD - International Conference on Urban Drainage. Under the main theme “Moving towards a green and sustainable urban drainage,” we invite the global community of researchers and practitioners to come together and exchange ideas on the latest knowledge, innovations and developments in urban drainage.
As the flagship conference of the IAHR/IWA Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, ICUD has been successfully held sixteen times across the world since its first edition in 1978. In 2027, we are honored to bring this distinguished series to China for the very first time, a milestone that reflects the growing contributions of Chinese researchers and practitioners in global cooperation.
Over the past decades, China has made substantial investments in urban drainage infrastructure, with the total length of its sewer networks increasing by six times in just twenty years. Since 2015, the national Sponge City initiative has mobilized over 100 billion euros in total investment, driving innovation in Low-Impact Development, resilient infrastructure, smart monitoring, and digital twin technologies, among others. These efforts have forged a distinctive path toward sustainable development in urban water management. In recent years, Chinese researchers have been increasingly active and influential in the field of urban drainage. ICUD 2027 will share these Chinese experiences with the whole community, offering new insights and solutions to address climate challenges and advance green transformation in urban drainage worldwide.
Ningbo, a vibrant port city in eastern China, ranks first globally in ocean cargo throughput, serving as China’s key maritime gateway to the world. The spectacular 36-km Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge, connects Ningbo and Shanghai. In Ningbo, you can explore the remarkable Hemudu Neolithic site, where 7,000 years of civilization began. This perfect blend of heritage and modernization creates an ideal setting for our conference, where we gather to exchange cutting-edge research, foster international collaboration, and collectively advance our field toward new horizons of innovation.
We look forward to seeing you in Ningbo in 2027!
David Zhu, Haifeng Jia, and Jean-Luc. Bertrand-Krajewski
